We at eXit SPACE acknowledge that ballet has a long history of exclusion – from socio-economic status, to skin color, body type, age, and level of training – but are proud to be one of a growing number of dance education facilities that stands on the firm notion that ballet is for everybody and every body with the intention of elevating individual artistic voices. Basic Ballet teachers provide options for modifications and alternative movements frequently so that all dancers can participate in ways that feel safe and successful!

Basic classes are nine-week series intended for the absolute beginner. The intention of the Basic Series is to prepare adults who have never taken a dance class before with the skills necessary to matriculate safely and confidently into our beginner classes. Basic teachers start with an overview of essential vocabulary while introducing concepts related to alignment, coordination, and body awareness. The course moves slowly and caters to the individual needs of the group, but instruction is scaffolded to enhance dancer proficiency throughout the session.
Beginner classes at eXit SPACE are all drop-in based and are a great option for intermediate/advanced beginners––folks who are relatively new to dance or a style of dance but who already have a grasp on the foundational vocabulary of the genre. Because of the drop-in nature of these classes, teachers do not break down the style from the absolute beginning each week; instead, they assume dancers know basic steps well enough for class to flow without as much breakdown and review foundational skills within the context of longer exercises.
Basic Modern: Please plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Dancers wear bare feet for modern dance, but may choose to wear socks as long as they aren’t too slippery to travel through space in (we recommend thin, cotton socks). We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle—no glass-wear, please! To shop for dancewear, consider: Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online).
Basic Jazz: Please plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Jazz shoes are highly encouraged to maximize your safety and experience, but are not required. We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle - no glass-wear, please! To shop for dancewear/shoes, consider: Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online).
Basic Hip Hop: Please wear clothing that allows for freedom of movement and makes you feel confident. We recommend loose or fitted t-shirts or tank tops; joggers, sweatpants, or leggings; and sneakers. All footwear must be clean and indoor-only with flexible non-marking soles (minimal tread). To enhance your comfort and visibility during class, we suggest tying back long hair back in a way that reflects your personal style. Please avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry and plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle — no glass-wear, please!
Basic tap: Please plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Tap shoes are required to maximize your safety and experience and can be purchased locally at Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online). We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle — no glass-wear, please!
Basic Ballet: Please wear clothing that allows for freedom of movement and makes you feel confident; you may choose to wear traditional ballet attire such as tights/leggings and a leotard, or form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Ballet slippers (leather or canvas) are highly encouraged to maximize your safety and experience, but are not required. We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle—no glass-wear, please! To shop for dancewear/shoes, consider: Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online).
Basic Burlesque: lease plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. To enhance your comfort and visibility during class, we suggest tying long hair back in a way that reflects your personal style, but it can also be kept down depending on your level of comfort. Bare feet, jazz shoes, or indoor-only heels that one can move in comfortably are recommended for this class; please account for your safety and security as the top priority when choosing footwear. Jazz shoes, character shoes and ballroom heels can be purchased locally at Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton). Dance heels can also be purchased online via Pleaser Shoes (note that these shoes are often created for pole dancers and erotic laborers). Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle — no glass-wear, please!
Injuries: If you have recently experienced an acute injury, or are actively working to heal from a past injury, please consult your doctor or physical therapist to get a better idea of what you’re cleared for. If you are cleared to dance with or without restrictions, please join us! Questions to consider when speaking with your physician:
- Participation restrictions: Am I cleared to dance with or without restrictions?
- Activity restrictions: Are there specific classes or genres of dance I’m not cleared to take?
- Technique restrictions: Am I allowed to do deep-knee bending with the feet flat (grand plié)? Heel raises (élevé/relevé)? High kicks/extreme hip flexion (grand battement)? Exercises in external hip rotation (turnout)? Jump on two feet (sauté)? Jump from one foot to the other (jeté)? Leap (grand jeté)? Go into and out of the floor (floorwork, inversions)?
- Time restrictions: Am I limited to a certain number of minutes/hours per day of dancing? A certain number of days per week?
Disabilities: The Basic Series can reasonably accommodate dancers with low-support-needs-disabilities. If you anticipate needing accommodations (such as more frequent breaks, lower music volume, etc.) or modifications (such as physical transpositions for floor work to remain upright) we encourage you to consider what those may be in advance and reach out. Please bear in mind that theNEST is not ADA accessible; all other eXit SPACE locations are. If you’re unsure whether your disability needs can be reasonably met by our organization, please contact our Basic Series Coordinator for more information: miranda@exitspacedance.com
Absolutely. Basic instructors teach nearly identical classes the first and second week of the series.
Dancers are permitted to use a maximum of two makeup classes per session within six months of the missed class. Makeups are permitted in any basic class or level-appropriate drop-in class on our schedule (any genre). If you’re interested in taking a makeup class, please take a look at the online schedule and email miranda@exitspacedance.com in advance with your requested class name and makeup date/time.
Of course! While some dancers will take the Series once and move straight into beginner drop-ins, other dancers take the series, twice, three times, or more. We’ve had some dancers take the series year after year! You get to decide the pace with which you move through our basic/beginner levels with the support of our faculty.
It completely depends on your interest and stamina, but we do have dancers who take back to back Basic classes all the time and enjoy the immersive experience.
