Basic Series

For those who want to dance but never have!

Basic series are our only classes that require enrollment in a series of classes. Each session is 9 weeks in length and the classes cover one style and meet for one hour per week. Over the course of a basic session, our instructors will cover the fundamentals, with an emphasis on introducing each student to the structure of dance class and the core elements of technique. Students progress through each class, developing body awareness, correct alignment, strength, and increased flexibility. Even if you're convinced you were born with two left feet, our experienced faculty will guide you through the process of learning the fundamentals.

BASIC Modern | Modern Dance is a style of western concert dance developed in the late 19th and early 20th century by European artists as an artistic rebellion against the perceived constraints of classical ballet and by European diasporic movers seeking to re-ground dance in indigenous and Black dance foundations. Basic Modern at eXit SPACE honors the history of modern dance through an emphasis on equity and individuality while guiding beginning modern dancers through the structure of a dance class and the etiquette required in a studio. Warm-up exercises designed to center the body, re-pattern movement habits, and build strength and flexibility will prepare beginning dancers to move more fully, while movement combinations center and across the floor will allow for an in-depth study on locomotor steps while advancing coordination, musicality, and self-expression. Basic Modern dancers will also develop a deep connection to their center, confidence in level-appropriate inversion techniques and acrobatic skills (monkey jumps, tip ups, and floor rolls), refined articulation through the spine, and freedom of movement, focusing their attention on traveling through space with intention and dynamic variation.

Geared towards adult dancers of all ages, body types, and backgrounds, Basic teachers provide options for modifications and alternative movements frequently so that all dancers can participate in ways that feel safe and successful.

Basic Jazz | Aesthetically, Jazz can range from vernacular styles such as the Charleston and Jitterbug, to lyrical, commercial, and Broadway forms that many will recognize from contemporary pop culture. Basic Jazz classes at eXit SPACE are primarily informed by Euro-influenced forms of lyrical, commercial, and Broadway styles, while honoring the multifaceted nature of the form through an emphasis on individuality and stylistic range. As a new student to jazz dance, you will be guided through the structure of a dance class and the etiquette required from all dancers while in a studio. Classes begin with a comprehensive warm-up focusing on strength-building, flexibility, isolation, extension, and rhythm accompanied by a wide range of popular music selections from pop to Broadway. Rooted into the ground through use of deep plié (bent knees), movement combinations center and across the floor allow for an in-depth study on locomotor steps while advancing coordination, musicality, and self-expression. Jazz emphasizes strong footwork and confident gross motor movement, so eXit SPACE Basic students are presented with ideas and principles of movement as well as the fundamentals of rhythm, syncopation, isolation, and individual expression. Basic Jazz teachers provide options for modifications and alternative movements frequently so that all dancers of all ages, body types, and backgrounds can participate in ways that feel safe and successful.

Basic Ballet | Basic Ballet is geared towards adults of all ages, backgrounds, and body types looking for an introduction to classical ballet technique, vocabulary, and aesthetics. As a Basic Ballet student, you will be guided through the structure of a dance class and the etiquette required from all dancers in a studio, learning fundamentals of the technique through a traditional class structure: ballet barre followed by center floor and locomotor technique. At barre, dancers learn basic vocabulary from pliés and tendús to fondus and frappés, before moving out to the center floor where they practice stationary turns, extensions, and jumps. Basic Ballet students learn to waltz, leap, and turn across the floor with ample opportunities to modify movements as needed for individual safety and with a constant emphasis on dynamic alignment, strength development, body awareness, safety, artistic expression, and quality of movement throughout.

We at eXit SPACE acknowledge that ballet has a long history of exclusion – from socio-economic status, to skin color, body type, age, and level of training – but are proud to be one of a growing number of dance education facilities that stands on the firm notion that ballet is for everybody and every body with the intention of elevating individual artistic voices. Basic Ballet teachers provide options for modifications and alternative movements frequently so that all dancers can participate in ways that feel safe and successful!

Basic Hip Hop Fundamentals and Movement Skills | Hip hop dance emerged in the late 1960's out of the South Bronx, an economically depressed neighborhood in New York City composed primarily of Black and Latinx families. As a way to connect with one another and distract from racial oppression and poverty, youth in the South Bronx (and later Brooklyn and Harlem) channelled their fear and anger into a new culture of movement and expression, often using vacant lots and abandoned buildings for house parties where the co-mingling of rapping, DJing, B-boying, and graffiti emerged as the pillars of hip hop culture. Basic Hip Hop classes at eXit SPACE are taught by instructors well-versed in the history of hip hop dance and skilled at integrating early hip hops steps and styles into movements that represent hip hop in its current state. As a new student to hip hop dance, you will be guided through the structure of a dance class and the etiquette required from all dancers in a studio while learning the nuances of individuality, rhythm, and theatricality. Basic Hip Hop classes begin with an aerobic warm up to practice fundamental steps and body isolations with clear dynamics, all the while building the necessary strength and flexibility for full-bodied movement. After warmup and skill building, dancers learn locomotor steps and choreography, advancing coordination, musicality and self-expression in doing so, ending the session with increased confidence, rhythm, and physical awareness.

Basic Tap | Against the backdrop of a historical framework, Basic Tap students at eXit SPACE are trained in fundamental rhythmic skills, footwork, and traditional tap dances, exploring more detailed and difficult steps, syncopated rhythms, and challenging progressions over time. Classes are influenced by both rhythm tap (which focuses on percussion, complex rhythms, and use of the feet as instruments) as well as Broadway style tap (which combines rhythm tap and jazz dance for a more theatrical aesthetic and physical storytelling). Basic Tap dancers will be guided through the structure of a dance class and the etiquette required from all dancers while in a studio; warm-up exercises designed to re-pattern movement habits, build balance and strength, and introduce different rhythmic patterns to prepare the student to move more fully, while combinations center and across the floor allow for an in-depth study on specific tap steps and their expressed rhythms. Throughout class, students are encouraged to use their whole body to feel the sounds their feet are making, find their own groove within the given steps, and advance coordination, musicality, and self-expression along the way.

Basic Beginning Burlesque | Delve into your sensuality and get comfortable in your own skin. This all ages (18+) and all backgrounds welcomed class will help you find a way to transform into a version of yourself you perhaps did not know existed.Through simple twirls, whirls and shimmies, explore a class inspired by the classic art of tease and reveal. Learn choreography by Scarlett Folds and experience the suppleness of slow burns, high energy movements and fun, titillating ways to strip.

Basic classes are nine-week series intended for the absolute beginner. The intention of the Basic Series is to prepare adults who have never taken a dance class before with the skills necessary to matriculate safely and confidently into our beginner classes. Basic teachers start with an overview of essential vocabulary while introducing concepts related to alignment, coordination, and body awareness. The course moves slowly and caters to the individual needs of the group, but instruction is scaffolded to enhance dancer proficiency throughout the session.

Beginner classes at eXit SPACE are all drop-in based and are a great option for intermediate/advanced beginners––folks who are relatively new to dance or a style of dance but who already have a grasp on the foundational vocabulary of the genre. Because of the drop-in nature of these classes, teachers do not break down the style from the absolute beginning each week; instead, they assume dancers know basic steps well enough for class to flow without as much breakdown and review foundational skills within the context of longer exercises.

Basic Modern: Please plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Dancers wear bare feet for modern dance, but may choose to wear socks as long as they aren’t too slippery to travel through space in (we recommend thin, cotton socks). We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle—no glass-wear, please! To shop for dancewear, consider: Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online).

Basic Jazz: Please plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Jazz shoes are highly encouraged to maximize your safety and experience, but are not required. We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle - no glass-wear, please! To shop for dancewear/shoes, consider: Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online).

Basic Hip Hop: Please wear clothing that allows for freedom of movement and makes you feel confident. We recommend loose or fitted t-shirts or tank tops; joggers, sweatpants, or leggings; and sneakers. All footwear must be clean and indoor-only with flexible non-marking soles (minimal tread). To enhance your comfort and visibility during class, we suggest tying back long hair back in a way that reflects your personal style. Please avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry and plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle — no glass-wear, please!

Basic tap: Please plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Tap shoes are required to maximize your safety and experience and can be purchased locally at Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online). We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle — no glass-wear, please!

Basic Ballet: Please wear clothing that allows for freedom of movement and makes you feel confident; you may choose to wear traditional ballet attire such as tights/leggings and a leotard, or form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. Ballet slippers (leather or canvas) are highly encouraged to maximize your safety and experience, but are not required. We ask that all long hair is tied back and that students avoid wearing long or dangling jewelry. Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle—no glass-wear, please! To shop for dancewear/shoes, consider: Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton), or DiscountDance.com (online).

Basic Burlesque: lease plan to wear form-fitting athleisure attire such as leggings and a t-shirt. To enhance your comfort and visibility during class, we suggest tying long hair back in a way that reflects your personal style, but it can also be kept down depending on your level of comfort. Bare feet, jazz shoes, or indoor-only heels that one can move in comfortably are recommended for this class; please account for your safety and security as the top priority when choosing footwear. Jazz shoes, character shoes and ballroom heels can be purchased locally at Center Stage Dance Shop, Dancewear Center (Kirkland & Renton). Dance heels can also be purchased online via Pleaser Shoes (note that these shoes are often created for pole dancers and erotic laborers). Please also plan to bring a metal/plastic water bottle — no glass-wear, please!

Basic Series faculty do their absolute best to establish an environment that can support dancers with low to moderate support needs within the scope of our resources and professional expertise. Faculty provide ongoing movement options, establish a trauma-informed culture of consent, and teach with an awareness to different learning styles. Our teachers are also flexible to adjusting music volume and are open to filming select exercises during class for practice. In order to create an equitable space for those with sensory sensitivities and allergies, we are also a scent free studio. That said, please consider the following if you’re questioning whether to enroll:

Injuries: If you have recently experienced an acute injury, or are actively working to heal from a past injury, please consult your doctor or physical therapist to get a better idea of what you’re cleared for. If you are cleared to dance with or without restrictions, please join us! Questions to consider when speaking with your physician:
  • Participation restrictions: Am I cleared to dance with or without restrictions?
  • Activity restrictions: Are there specific classes or genres of dance I’m not cleared to take?
  • Technique restrictions: Am I allowed to do deep-knee bending with the feet flat (grand plié)? Heel raises (élevé/relevé)? High kicks/extreme hip flexion (grand battement)? Exercises in external hip rotation (turnout)? Jump on two feet (sauté)? Jump from one foot to the other (jeté)? Leap (grand jeté)? Go into and out of the floor (floorwork, inversions)?
  • Time restrictions: Am I limited to a certain number of minutes/hours per day of dancing? A certain number of days per week?
If you are cleared to dance with restrictions, we hope you’ll dance with us! Please let us know what those restrictions are so that the Faculty can check in and come prepared with appropriate modifications.

Disabilities: The Basic Series can reasonably accommodate dancers with low-support-needs-disabilities. If you anticipate needing accommodations (such as more frequent breaks, lower music volume, etc.) or modifications (such as physical transpositions for floor work to remain upright) we encourage you to consider what those may be in advance and reach out. Please bear in mind that theNEST is not ADA accessible; all other eXit SPACE locations are. If you’re unsure whether your disability needs can be reasonably met by our organization, please contact our Basic Series Coordinator for more information: miranda@exitspacedance.com

Absolutely. Basic instructors teach nearly identical classes the first and second week of the series.

Dancers are permitted to use a maximum of two makeup classes per session within six months of the missed class. Makeups are permitted in any basic class or level-appropriate drop-in class on our schedule (any genre). If you’re interested in taking a makeup class, please take a look at the online schedule and email miranda@exitspacedance.com in advance with your requested class name and makeup date/time.

We have THREE locations. Please look for the studio your class is in and then double-check the location:

We’ve had some dancers take the series year after year! You get to decide the pace with which you move through our basic/beginner levels with the support of our faculty.

It completely depends on your interest and stamina, but we do have dancers who take back to back Basic classes all the time and enjoy the immersive experience.

eXit SPACE Mask Protocols

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been carefully following CDC and public health guidelines so we can keep our community safe.

On July 5th many restrictions will be lifted for operation of our studios EXCEPT our mask mandate which is vaccinated dancers with proof of vaccination may unmask.

Here's how it works: If you're fully vaccinated (2 weeks after your second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or 2 weeks after a single dose of the J & J vaccine), upload your proof of vaccination to your mindbody account by following the steps below. With your account updated we will note that you are fully vaccinated, and you won't need to bring in proof of vaccination for subsequent visits.

** Proof of vaccination means you are fully vaccinated (no early uploads please!) and your card has been uploaded to MindBody or a member of the office staff has reviewed your card and updated your account as vaccination verified. Please do not show your card to an instructor and expect subsequent visits are approved for dancing unmasked. Please be responsible to our community so everyone can feel safe.

Steps to Uploading your vaccination card: Once our administrative staff has verified your upload, we will delete the uploaded card.

Please Note: It is not a HIPAA violation for us to ask for this information but we recognize some dancers do not want the information stored for any amount of time. If you do not want to upload your information, you may show your card to a member of the office staff so they can mark your account as verified.

If you do not wish to provide proof of vaccination or if you are not fully vaccinated, we ask that you respect the mandate and continue to dance with a mask. Additionally, there is no requirement to dance unmasked if vaccinated.

Dearest Readers,
The ton is abuzz at the announcement of the anniversary ball, which will surely be the event of the season. This author finds herself enamored at the thought of such an opulent affair and has therefore been toiling away in preparation to present a work of her own – one which shall undoubtedly draw the eye of the Queen herself! In fact, it is with but humble anticipation that I ask of you, dear readers, to reserve a space on your dance card for this gracious author and dancemaker, for we all must know that this social season (of which there have been a tremendous nineteen prior), only the most remarkable works of brilliance will do. Whether we take to the floor for a minuet, quadrille, or a waltz has not yet been decided... But make haste! Only those who fly like the wind shall be promised a position much desired!
Yours Truly,
Lady Whistledown

In this dance and when I make dances, it is about the process: I focus on who is in the room.
It is important that I collaborate with the dance artists in the room.

I hope to create a work that showcases each dancer and also culminates in a project that is fully a group work/community. I often create works that are about the individuals that support the group. I am asking that dancers in the work take my class on a regular basis as the work I want to make will demand a strong ability to do the movement in my class with technical proficiency.

Miranda is looking for a large cast of dancers for a fierce, aerobic work set to a mashup of Unholy by Sam Smith & Kim Petras, Milkshake by Kelis, Diva by Beyoncé, Operate by Peaches, and Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics (I have pulled portions of this mashup by Titus Jones for our piece). Dancers can expect a challenging experience rich with formation changes, dynamic shifts, and expressive embodiment. Stylistically, this work will blend commercial jazz aesthetics with more classical jazz technique and contemporary modern patterns. Dancers who enroll should have a strong understanding of foundational jazz vocabulary (e.g. ball change, battement, chassé, triplet, pas de bourré, etc.) and be prepared to move with sharp, quick energy in both large unison phrases and layered group sections.

Note: Dancers are permitted a maximum of two absences for the entire process if absolutely necessary, but in general are expected to attend every rehearsal. It is highly recommended that dancers take a weekly Jazz class on the schedule throughout the process, such as Beginning Jazz on Tuesdays with Lauren, Intermediate Jazz with Tyra on Thursdays, or a Basic Jazz Series (Thursdays or Saturdays). Bonus points if you take modern too!

Enrollment Guidelines & Considerations

takePAUSE is an educational opportunity for dancers of all levels and is also a professionally produced show featuring choreography by working artists. Please bear in mind that by enrolling in takePAUSE, you are enrolling in the opportunity to immerse yourself in an individual choreographer's artistic process, which may be similar to or significantly different from choreographic experiences you've had with other artists. Every choreographer has their own means of setting work and expectations around absences, etiquette, and technique training between rehearsals.

We ask that dancers enroll in level-appropriate pieces with the intention and ability to attend all scheduled rehearsals, or else have gotten permission from the choreographer to be absent. Please note that dancers who are absent for rehearsal may or may not be choreographed into the section they've missed, time and choreographer permitting. For safety reasons and beyond, dancers should be actively taking technique classes at eXit SPACE leading up to and throughout the choreographic process.

The choreographic process is one that relies on open-mindedness, flexibility, generosity, and collaboration. Be prepared to work together with dancers of all backgrounds and experiences in order to help us continue eXit SPACE's vision for an accepting and inclusive dance space for all.

All paid tuition is non-refundable.
